New turbine for the waste incineration plant
The WIP belonging to Renergia Zentralschweiz AG has been in operation since 2015 and acts as the central waste incineration facility in the region. The plant incinerates over 280,000 tonnes of waste annually and produces almost 200,000 MWh of electricity from it, among other products. This is enough to supply approx. 30,000 households, roughly equivalent to the size of the city of Lucerne.
CALIQUA Services
- CALIQUA handled the delivery and installation of a steam turbine and a gearbox. Both were installed on the existing base frame and coupled with the existing generator.
- CALIQUA also provided the detailed engineering for integration into the existing plant and adapted all connecting pipelines, as well as the electrical and control technology. All this was done without interrupting the operation of the existing plant
Customer Benefits
Renergia benefited from obtaining all services from a single source. As CALIQUA had already supplied the previous turbine and the complete thermal plant, everyone involved in the project had the necessary detailed knowledge.
Challenges
The project had a tight time frame: the old turbine and gearbox had to be dismantled, and the new turbine and gearbox installed, within nine days. Within this period, the turbine and gearbox also had to be connected both electrically and mechanically and the entire plant brought back online. This was only possible because all the work was planned in advance and a detailed plan was created for every task.
Technical data
The turbine is an extraction condensing turbine with LP extraction. It has the following technical data:
- Speed: 5,700 rpm
- Power: 33,050 kW
- Live steam: 140 t/h at 40.5 bar and 420°C
- Extraction steam: 0–131.5 t/h at 4.7 bar and 160°C
- Bleeder steam: 0–7.5 t/h at 0.44–1.02 bar
- Waste steam: 8.5–140 t/h at 0.06–0.16 bar
The gearbox has double helical gearing and a capacity of 34,000 kW.
“ "We deliberately chose a partner who would actively contribute their ideas and thereby advance the project. The contractor option from CALIQUA promised the highest energy efficiency and thus got the most energy out of the waste" ”
